If thou art near when life is closing,
All joyful shall I fall asleep,
Be Thou with me as I awaken,
And claim my soul when I arise.
If Thou art near when life is closing,
All joyful shall I fall alseep.
Ah, how serene were thus my passing,
Thy tender hand upraised in blessing
Would sanctify my slumber deep.
Be Thou with me as I awaken
And claim my soul when I arise.

Past the State House and government buildings on Rt. 95, in the northern wooded section of Providence off Blackstone Boulevard, Swan Point has been the place of rest for many of Rhode Island's politicians and elite for over a century.  Perhaps one of the most-visited and famous graves is that of H.P. Lovecraft, writer of fantasy and horror in the 19th century.   Today the sweeping lawns and park-like setting is a serene and restful place.  The grounds are beautifully maintained, and some of the most impressive stone carving and monument designs  line the avenues.  The Ostby knotwork cross is in excess of 15 feet and commands the view on Catapala Avenue.  Large trees behind the cross shelter several of the Ostby relatives, and it is only by venturing beneath the venerable old branches that several headstones may be seen.  Some stones are worn away with time -several are host to lichen which obscures the written record of Ostby relatives.  Birdsong fills the air.  This is not a mournful place, but one of sunlight and flowers- and memories.
